Review of Blue Velvet

Fig 1 Poster of Blue Velvet

Fig 2 Jeffery in closet

A young man returns to his home town after being away and discovers a severed human ear in a field. Not satisfied with the police's pace, he and the police detective's daughter carry out their own investigation. The object of his investigation turns out to be a beautiful and mysterious woman involved with a violent evil man.

There’s a strange mix of comfort and beauty with terror and awfulness.” (Carr)  The beautiful singer Sandy is strangely disturbed.  Sandy sees Jeffery in the wardrobe. Soon after engages in killing the guy with a knife. After makes love to him after. Really Blue Velvet really doesn’t make any sense. Realistic in life when you see a random person in your room you won’t just get angry then make love to the Peron. You would run for your life screaming.  The saddest thing is watching women like Sandy getting raped. After being punched in the face. As this all comes down to Frank a horrible evil man who is perverted to the core.  Also you have Dorothy a very sweet innocent girl. Who really knows what she is getting into? Which is trouble really is Jeffery.  After saying what she knows some details about the ear.  What is funny is how both Jeffery and Dorothy are really nice people as their main issue is to solve this investigation together.  Strange that Jeffery and Dorothy get along. Jeffery is one of them people who are determined to investigate further where Dorothy is not so sure and really she doesn’t want anything to do with it. It seems that Jeffery is very possessive.  It means that Jeffery has a strong badness about him.

Each interwoven thread of musical and vocal track and dream/effects sound is kept in the same”. (Christly 2011) The music is old fashioned and seems to be dated in the 50s. What points at are the old looking cars and the song blue Velvet that is played so many times in the film. The music is very calm and gives you a happy feeling and is very calm and tender. Until things go ugly the music has a strong feeling where you know something awful is going to happen.   Also the use of primary colours used, this could mean it’s just being plain and simple towards colour. It’s funny in the end when the music comes in and the cameras view is towards the character of the film and gradually moves in directly to the sky. It has some meaning that it leads to a nice happy ending.  When Jeffery and Sandy are having sex Jeff hits Sandy, then a flame keeps appearing could be seduction kind of feeling. Maybe might have a meaning.
“It more or less seems to be taking place in the present day, but it mashes together elements from several eras.” (Hanke 2010) The film blue velvet is set in different eras.  It has the old 50s style and the modern day of the present.  It is strange that it’s been put in this way.  To have a disturbing effect to make the audience, have a different angle of what is happening.  The camera work is shot in a perspective where there is more than one story and it changes to make the film more interesting.  In this film there are a lot of mind games, the story of Sandy is sad. But near the end of the film Sandy is hugging her kid. This means it ends nicely as she got what she wanted.

Review of The Shining

Fig 1 Poster of the Shining

A family become the winter caretakers of an isolated hotel where Danny, the son, sees disturbing visions of the hotels past using a telepathic gift known as "The Shining". The father, Jack Torrance, is a writing project when he suddenly slips into insanity as a result of cabin fever and former guests of the hotel's ghosts. Soon after jack goes mad he’s then running around trying to kill his wife and son.

Hallorann warns Danny to stay clear of Room 237, where the violence took place, and he tells Danny they share the "shining," the psychic gift of reading minds and seeing the past and future. (Ebert 1980) strange enough that Danny has a gift where he can read minds. Dick warns Danny of the room 237. The room is haunted by the caretaker. Funny as Danny has the ability to somehow, stop the parents from going to the hotel in the first place. During the film Dick in his bed senses that something is wrong as he calls up the rangers.  The film is really disturbing and has a much untaken feeling. Especially with the music it’s awful because something is going to happen it gets louder.  It could be entering the feeling of a horrific scene. Though where you have Danny and Dick who are physic they don’t help. Dick gets sliced with an axe. You would think hope is lost. A ability that could save Danny and Wendy.

Fig 2 Jack and Waiter

“It has been pointed out that there's a mirror in every scene in which Jack sees a ghost, causing us to wonder whether the spirits are reflections of a tortured psyche.” (Berardinelli 2009)  It seems that jack at this point has lost his mind. As it seems he sees ghosts, as in one particular scene as jacks sits down at the bar. Jack says ‘All I want is a drink’ as he closes his eyes opens them and there’s a waiter.  The ghosts are already trying to drawn him in. So then Jack is basically giving into the spirits which are trying to change him.  This is resulting to uncanny and a figment of Jacks imagination. Which jack is falling for and yet Jack cannot see it happen to him. But strange enough it’s happening to Wendy and Danny as they can see disturbing things happening in the hotel to. But not in the level of Jack as he has complete lost it.

“Nicholson's face suited though it is to demoniacal expressions.”  (Adams) Jacks face with his expressions is mad and scary because this does have character which makes you feel uncomfortable. Wendy’s face is screaming for fear of her life. As she’s watching Jack destroy the door with an axe. This is very insane and of putting.  Understanding Jacks character being a mad man does work in a very bad way.  This does causes fear in the eyes of Danny especially because as he’s only a little boy Danny is as tough to run away from him and catch Jack of guard when he loses him in the maze.  Danny wipes of his footsteps on the snow.  This is quiet intelligent as Danny is trying to out think his father to escape. As in the end Jack loses him then he falls to the ground. The threatening feeling is to be chased by your father is trying to kill you. What is so bizarre beyond recognition?  The point of this film is trying to understand that Jack has gone mad but can he fight the demons that seem to lurk within him.  The dark side does unfortunately win what is a disappointment. It does feel that the uncanny lurks in the film strongly.
